OBSERVANCE PHILOSOPHY

Worship at Temple Israel combines traditional and contemporary perspectives. Hebrew is the language of our people, past and present, and it is our basic language of prayer; but we add spiritually uplifting readings and songs, to enhance our worship. We prize the participation of all of our members, whether adult, teen or youth. On any given shabbat, many of our members will ascend the bimah (pulpit) to lead us in prayer and to read the Torah.

We are an egalitarian congregation. Men and women alike are invited to receive pulpit honors. Whatever one's means, place or station of origin, to be a Jew at worship is to be an equal member of our community, standing before God, and we apportion honors widely, based on our respect for that fundamental equality. To obtain an honor, one need only ask a gabbai or notify the Temple office.
